At lower levels, Werewolf is maybe a better choice, because it's easier to level up, and Vampire Lord won't have as many advantages.

As for vampire lord, you CAN go melee, but I would highly recommend using the magic form of vampire lord, so if you're going mage(like I did) I'd say go Vampire Lord.

Also I would recommend getting the ring of Hircine so you don't lose your mind trying to level up werewolf. If you're going fighter then you'll have high stamina, meaning you can spam werewolf power attacks from now till kingdom come. First of all, whether or not you're going fighter or mage build.
